Everyone who uses a car needs to have a few tricks up their sleeves for maneuvering through common obstacles on the road. We’re not all natural Grand Prix drivers, but thanks to some clever people out there, we now have plenty of tips, gadgets, and apps that make time spent behind the wheel a lot more convenient.
No matter how many years you’ve been driving, chances are there’s something here that will make your time in the car go a lot smoother:
#1 Never Lose Your Car Keys
Until our vehicles unlock via some kind of fingerprint system, we’ll still be using keys or fobs, and as long as keys exist, so does the possibility of losing them (usually when you’re already late for work).
But one way to make sure you never lose your keys again is by attaching a blu-tooth tile that you can use to locate from your phone. And when you lose your phone, you can use the tile to locate that too.
#2 Avoid Getting Towed with Windshieldink
Getting towed can happen for a number of reasons, but the cause never makes the result any better. Whether you’re in an unfamiliar city, not very good with signs, or missed the street sweeping notice, you can avoid getting towed by allowing yourself to be contacted ahead of time through the Windshieldink app.
#3 Never Miss an Exit Again
Rather than trying to look for the little arrow on your GPS, or making last-minute guesses, just remember that the exit is located on whichever side of the sign it is positioned on. This is one of those tips we’ve all heard before, but somehow keep forgetting…
#4 Dig Yourself out of the Mud or Snow
A fun off-road detour can quickly go sour if you get stuck in the snow or mud, and it can get harder to get out if your tires aren’t getting any traction. Keep a bag of kitty litter to help increase traction beneath your tires. And if you’re truly unprepared, try using the floormats already in your car.
#5 Find Your Own Parking Spot
You can use the Windshieldink App for this one as well. By sending a message to your own license plate number with the GPS location tagged, you’ll receive a link your location on Google Maps. You’ll never spend time wandering aimlessly in a parking lot again, and you don’t even need to install a separate app.
#6 De-Stink Your Car
Maybe you picked up a bunch of sweaty teenagers from basketball, or your dog got into some pond water (again), or your backseat has become a graveyard of discarded sneakers, whatever the case, no one wants to keep driving around with a funk in the air.
An effective and affordable solution to deodorizing your car is to keep fragranced dryer sheets inside– no more bad odor!
#7 Get Your Frozen Doors Unstuck with Hand Sanitizer
They always say you should sanitize door knobs and handles, but usually for sanitary reasons. What you probably didn’t know, is that you can use hand sanitizer as an excellent “anti-freeze” for frozen handles. This is because of the alcohol content used in hand sanitizers.
So, make sure to keep some around for extra cold days and who knows, it might also come in handy for unexpected roadside bathroom stops.
#8 Save on Gas
Low tire pressure leads to a decrease in gas mileage, so keep those tires filled! You can also save on gas by either using a GPS (less time trying to find your way) or a gas price comparison app like GasBuddy that provides you with the cheapest gas prices to your nearest location in Canada and the United States.
By combining those tips, you’ll find yourself spending a lot less on gas. Various environmental taxes are raising fuel prices so make the effort to lower your fuel consumption.
#9 Pump Gas Like a pro (and Not Like a Confused Person)
Ever get to a fuel station and forget which side your gas tank is on? Ever do it repeatedly even though you’ve owned your car for years? If you tend to forget, or you are renting a car, then look a little closer at the fuel gauge. Near the gas pump icon, you’ll see a little arrow pointing to which side the tank is on. Yes, we swear it has always been there.
#10 Impress Your Date With a Great Parallel Park
Most people put all their focus on having a nice ride when it comes to impressing their dates, but being skilled at driving said ride is much more impressive. Rather than making circles looking for the easiest street parking, master the parallel park with this detailed infographic to show off your skill behind the wheel.
So, remember these 10 hacks to dodge some potential pitfalls that all drivers encounter at some point: These helpful hacks will make life as a car owner a lot smoother, and may save you money and a big headache down the road!
