As more people use mobile technology to connect socially, displaying your identity is becoming more and more the norm. Windshieldink is the new way to leave a note on a windshield. One of the first questions that regularly comes up during conversations with our members is “should we identify that our vehicle is registered with Windshieldink?” Specifically, their question is whether or not they should stick an identifying decal on their vehicle to show that their license plate is registered.
Here at Windshieldink, we’ve discussed the benefits and drawbacks of identifying vehicles with a special decal. After much consideration, we’ve decided that we don’t want to push for the use of identification. Here is our list of pro’s and con’s to help you understand how we arrived at our decision.
Benefits of vehicle identification with a decal:
There’s no denying that applying a decal is really great marketing. After seeing the logo on a vehicle, people will naturally want to investigate what it is. The more people who use a decal, the more awareness of the Windshieldink brand will grow, and the better for all of us.
Having a decal will let everyone know if a vehicle is registered with Windshieldink, so there is no doubt of whether to send a message or not. Since it can take awhile for people to remember all the ways to utilize our app, having a decal present will be a helpful reminder.
Drawbacks of vehicle identification:
1. Resistance to decals
Simply put, some vehicle owners don’t want to publicly display a decal on their vehicle, and we totally understand.
2. We cannot guarantee 100% coverage
If we did supply decals, it is logistically difficult to distribute them to all members and ensure 100% coverage. However, if a vehicle doesn’t have a decal, the immediate assumption is that the vehicle is not registered, so don’t bother messaging it. Unfortunately this may not be the case at all.
We don’t want to discourage people from using our app to message someone simply because a vehicle isn’t marked with a decal. If identification is to be used, it will need to be 100% successful to be fully effective in order to not discourage members from contacting unmarked vehicles.
3. May encourage frivolous messages
It is less likely that a person will waste their time sending frivolous messages if the car is unmarked, and not guaranteed to be registered with Windshieldink.
On the flipside, if a person really needs to contact you, they’re more likely to take the time in the app to verify if your vehicle is registered. If their issue is unimportant, chances are they won’t go through the effort. Our hope is that Windshieldink’s messaging platform is used primarily for reasons of importance.
Based on these reasons, we decided to not push the need for identifying registered vehicles. Our hope is that our members understand the issues we’ve considered, and are in agreement with our chosen path.
However, as a suggestion, there is no harm in printing out a card and keeping it in your car. For example, “I have temporarily parked my car here. If you need to reach me, please use the Windshieldink mobile app”. This can prove to be helpful for you. If you briefly park somewhere, leave the note on your dash or in your window. This eliminates the need to display personal information, such as your name, phone number, or business card (if you even have one).
