Windshieldink

A License Plate Messaging App

Behind the Windshield March 13, 2018

How Many Car Models are Out There?

How many car models are there in the world?  It’s a tough question to answer.  According to US publisher, Wards Auto, as of 2010 there were an estimated 1.015 billion motor vehicles in use in the world.  These numbers categorized by car models would be enormous!  For our own curiosity, we decided to take a look at our Windshieldink database.  We’re curious to see how many car models we maintain.

The personal vehicle input is part of the user account set up process within our mobile app (see screenshot).  Members select their car make and model from the dropdown lists that are populated from various car make and model databases.

Mercedes-Benz tops the list

Our database contains 75 vehicle manufacturers from across North America, Europe, and other countries.  There is in excess of 1,700 different car models for these manufacturers. It also includes car models no longer in production; many we still see driving on the streets today.  Some car models sold in one country are not necessarily be sold in another.

Car Makes Within Windshieldink’s Vehicle List

Manufacturers continually have new models coming on to the market.  It must be a challenge to come up with new and inspiring car models and names every year!

The top three car makers within our database are Mercedes (131 models), Toyota (110 models), and Chevrolet (96 models).  If we went further back in time, the number of models would be higher. We also maintain a list of 50+ motorcycle manufacturers.

Based on the number of car models available, consumers have many choices!  It’s like the toothpaste or canned soup aisle in your local grocery store,  purchase options can be overwhelming!

Your car make and model are important to us

Why does the Windshieldink app ask its members to input their vehicle description when registering their license plate?   Well … there are three reasons;

  1. It helps the app user when sending a message. The app has a pop-up notification which verifies the member’s vehicle description (make and model) with the license plate number.   If the pop-up vehicle description doesn’t match the actual vehicle, the sender possibly has a typo in the license plate number.  There is potential that the license plate could be stolen and placed on a different vehicle.  If you think it is stolen, go ahead and send your message. It gets sent to the rightful plate owner, (read our blog here about stolen license plates).  Make sure your vehicle descriptors are correct when registering your vehicle.
  2. For general interest and statistical analysis.  Statistically, we want to see the types of vehicle models registering with Windshieldink.  It helps us define the persona of the registered members we are reaching in order to better tailor the app functionality.
  3. Future services from Windshieldink.  We continue to work towards developing new features associated with vehicle makes and models.

The vehicle list continues to grow

Windshieldink makes every effort to keep the vehicle database up to date.  As car manufactures develop new models, our vehicle list will to grow.   If  we don’t have your vehicle make or model registered in our database, let us know!  You can email us at support@windshieldink.com.   Periodic app updates for iOS and Android will include vehicle database updates.
